What is Eternal Judgment?
SHORT DEFINITION:
The moment of final judgment when the eternal fate of every human and
angel will be decided.
LONG DEFINITION:
There will come a day when the whole earth will be judged.
"For we must all appear before the judgment
seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things
done while in the body, whether good or bad." (2 Corinthians 5:10
- NIV) Those who have remained in Christ will surpass judgment.
(Romans 8:1) They will be raised new creatures and will judge the angels.
(1 Corinthians 6:3) The wicked will be raised to condemnation and will
receive a just penalty for the crimes committed while in the body. (John
5:28-29)
The appointed time for judgment is unknown even to Christ.
(Matthew 24:36)
On the Day of Judgment, we will be judged by our deeds. We are not saved
by works but we are judged by works. If Christ is truly in us, we have
confidence, as Christ works through us to produce works pleasing to God
(1 John 4:17). The work of God is this: to believe in Jesus (John 6:29).
The Holy Spirit is at work on earth this day trying to judge people according
to the word hoping they will repent. (John 16:8; 2 Peter 2:9) This brings
the burden of guilt upon us. Some will fall down and repent while others
will reject the Holy Spirit. These are the ones who will stand judgment
for not believing in Christ.
There is a difference between judgment and condemnation. Judgment is
the determination of guilt, condemnation is the sentencing of punishment.
All men will be judged. However, the righteous will be found clean and
will not be condemned. The wicked will be found wicked and will be condemned.
