What is Glory?
SHORT DEFINITION:
Glory is greatness, magnificence, splendor, and majesty. It something
that when witnessed causes praise, fame, admiration, honor, and exhultation
to be given.Very specifically when speaking of God, it is the greatness
of God, the goodness of God, the light of God, the majesty of God, and
the holiness of God.
Exodus 15:11
Who among the gods is like you, O Lord? Who is like you— majestic in holiness,
awesome in glory, working wonders?
LONG DEFINITION:
Glory is the greatness of God, the goodness of God, the light of God,
and the holiness of God—inherent to His being. (Psalms 86:10) The manifestation
of God's glory is beauty and delight. To see God is to see His glory,
whether through His works, His presence, or His dwelling. (Exodus 33:17-20;
John 1:14)
We do not give God His glory or make Him glorious. He is glorious by
nature. God is deserving of worship and praise. We worship the Lord in
the splendor of his holiness. (1 Chronicles 16:29)
Rather, His glory is seen through us. We were created for God's glory
that His glory may shine through us. (Isaiah 43:7) When we worship God
with love and praise, we declare His glory. In this way, God's glory shines
through us. We worship God because of who He is. Our worship is a result
of His love for us. In this way, God is glorified in us.
Glorification is the sharing of God's glory. (2 Corinthians 3:18) It
is the manifestation of God in us. We were created for God's glory, to
shine with the light of God. As creatures who fell from glory, our current
state is shame. (Romans 3:23) We are shamed of our nakedness and thus
need to be clothed. When we are clothed with the glory of God, we will
be glorified. We will shine like the stars in the sky. (1 Peter 5:4; Daniel
12:3)
In conclusion, what makes us great is God. Without God, we are nothing.
We cannot give ourselves life. We cannot make ourselves good. Our greatest
feats are like grass that withers and flowers that fall.
(1 Peter 1:24-25) What gives us glory is the presence of God surrounding
us. We are great, because He is great and He is ours.
